Answering your questions about neuropsychology

Frequently Asked Questions

Do we need a referral?

You do not need a referral for a neuropsychological assessment if your concerns are regarding your child’s attention, learning, or intellect. However, your GP, paediatrician, or other professional may have recommended that a neuropsychological assessment may be helpful for your child.

A referral from a paediatrician or psychiatrist is required for an autism assessment. This allows you to claim a Medicare rebate for children and young people under 25 years old. This rebate is only available for autism assessments.

What does an assessment involve?

The assessment has multiple steps.

  1. Parent interview prior to child’s assessment (1-2 hours)

  2. Child assessment in person or via Telehealth (2 to 4 hours)

  3. Analysis and reporting of all information collected (4-7 hours).

  4. Feedback session to discuss your child’s results (1-2 hours).

What tests will my child be doing?

Your child will be asked to complete tests to look at their “thinking skills”. This is not a medical test or a blood test - it’s more like school. Your child might be asked to do tasks on the iPad, computer, or using pencil and paper. We will look at a range of different abilities and skills depending on the reason for your child’s assessment. Some of the skills and abilities we will assess are as follows:

  • Visual skills

  • Language skills

  • Processing speed

  • Working memory

  • Learning and memory

  • Executive function

  • Academic skills

  • Attention and behaviour

  • Emotional health
